For one of our residents at Green Hills Residential Care Service, ANZAC Day is a day that will always remain special. Richard’s journey began in banking, but in 1974, he joined the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) seeking something more. For the next 20 years, the RAAF offered him adventure, purpose, and a deep sense of connection. His service took him across Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland, and as far as Malaysia and Darwin.
In his final year of service in 1994, Richard was involved in battling bushfires near Windermere. Caught in a fireball, he emerged shaken but resolute and proud to have served his country in a moment of real danger. Throughout his career, he was protecting Australia and living the ANZAC spirit of courage, endurance, and mateship.
For Richard, serving in the armed forces was about more than duty. It was about being involved in something bigger than himself. Military service meant safeguarding Australia’s way of life, our freedom, our values, and the safety of future generations. It meant being prepared to step forward when needed, whether overseas or at home, in times of conflict or crisis.
A life of service leaves a lasting impact. It shaped his identity, instilled discipline, resilience, and pride, and created bonds that lasted well beyond his years in uniform. But service also affects families. Long periods away, frequent relocations, and the constant undercurrent of risk were part of daily life. His family shared in both the sacrifices and the pride that came with his role.
Richard’s story reminds us that service does not end when the uniform is folded away. The values, experiences, and sense of responsibility carry on, influencing how life is lived long after active duty ends. His journey reflects the quiet strength of those who serve, protecting not just a nation, but the people and way of life they call home.
