Colour, Creativity & Costume: Barry’s Trip Down Memory Lane

25 Jun, 2025

At 88, Dalpura resident Barry has lived a life rich in colour, creativity, and costume. From dressing windows at Myer to travelling the world as a fashion buyer, and later dazzling audiences with his costume designs in amateur theatre, the Tamworth-born designer’s story is stitched with flair and passion.

From Tamworth to Sydney to Coffs Harbour, Barry’s career in the textiles industry was complemented by his avid love for theatre, costuming shows for the Coffs Musical Company like My Fair LadyChicago, and Guys and Dolls

Barry has been a resident at Dalpura Retirement Community for eight years and recently joined a small group of residents on a special outing to the “Remember When Cottage” in South Grafton. For Barry, it wasn’t just a trip—it was a homecoming.

Surrounded by vintage sewing patterns, corsets, and dresses from decades past, Barry lit up. His face visibly brightened as he recalled the feel of fine fabrics, the thrill of designing for the stage, and the joy of bringing characters to life through costume. He shared stories of showgirls, a trip to Hong Kong to buy feathers, and the magic of theatre with anyone who would listen.

Megan Ronk, Community Manager at Dalpura, watched as Barry came alive. “Barry was animated, engaged, and full of stories. He connected deeply with the displays and enjoyed sharing his knowledge and memories with us.”

The outing reconnected him with the passions that shaped his life. It wasn’t just about nostalgia; it was about being seen, heard, and valued for the vibrant person he still is.

Outings like this remind us all of the power of memory, connection, and joy. For Barry, this day out was a beautiful reminder that the past still has the power to inspire the present.
