A royal florist in our midst

Green Hills resident Rose carries a story that could well sit in an historical archive, yet it quietly infuses her everyday and the lives of our residents today in the sweetest of ways.

At just fifteen years of age, the aptly named Rose, stepped into a world of flowers and possibility at the renowned Constance Spry florist school in Sussex, England. Her days began with simple tasks such as trimming stems and removing wilted petals, learning not just the craft, but the care behind it. Even then, there was something in the way Rose worked. A natural eye, a steady hand, and a quiet dedication that did not go unnoticed.

It wasn’t long before that dedication took her to Mayfair, into one of London’s most prestigious florist shops. From there, her world expanded in a way few could imagine.

Buckingham Palace.

Rose’s mornings would begin early, walking through bustling flower markets as the city slowly woke. She chose each bloom carefully, considering colour, texture, and how it would come together in an arrangement. Nothing was rushed. Every piece had a purpose.

She would then make her way to the Palace.

Not through grand public entrances, but through a discreet door, one she was never permitted to speak about. From that moment on, she became part of something both meticulous and remarkable, where every detail mattered and every arrangement played a role in significant occasions.

On days of ceremony, the work came alive. Long banquet tables stretched across grand rooms, and Rose would carefully step onto them in soft cotton socks, balancing as she created centrepieces at their heart. It required trust, precision, and a calm confidence, qualities she carried with her throughout her career.

There were also quieter, human moments woven into the experience.

The Queen Mother, with her love of flowers, would sometimes pause and ask Rose what she was creating, especially when something unfamiliar caught her eye. The Queen herself took great care in choosing the vases, always thoughtful and deliberate in her selections.

Rose also watched as the royal children grew. Charles, still a teenager at the time, was polite and well mannered. Princess Anne showed little interest in the arrangements and was content simply knowing they pleased her mother.

There were also unexpected encounters with visitors, entertainers, and guests from around the world.

One moment that has stayed with Rose was meeting Princess Diana. She remembers her clearly, so tall that Rose instinctively looked up to meet her gaze.

It is not just where Rose worked that makes her story special; it is how she worked. With care, pride, and a deep respect for her craft.

Today, Rose shares these memories with us, offering a glimpse into a life that touched extraordinary places. Her story is not simply about royalty or grand settings. It is about dedication, skill, and the quiet contribution to moments that mattered. She continues to share her gift and skill with us, drawing on her wealth of experience to create stunning floral arrangements for all in our community to enjoy. We are fortunate to have her with us here at Green Hills Residential Care Service.
