Recently, Henley Brae residents enjoyed a truly memorable outing to the newly redeveloped Sydney Fish Market, an experience filled with fresh flavours, fascinating insights, and stunning surroundings.
We took in the impressive new building designed with both functionality and visitor experience in mind, the architecture modern, open, and welcoming. Expansive glass windows frame picturesque views of the harbour, flooding the space with natural light and creating a seamless connection between the bustling market and the waterfront beyond. The thoughtful design ensures wider walkways, improved accessibility, and a more comfortable environment for everyone to explore.
A highlight of the visit was our guided tour, led by a very knowledgeable and engaging guide. Residents were particularly fascinated by our visit to the auction floor, where we learned about the fast-paced and highly efficient Dutch auction system. Our guide explained how prices start high and gradually decrease until a buyer accepts the price—an exciting and dynamic process that ensures fresh seafood is sold quickly each morning. It was a unique behind-the-scenes glimpse into how one of the largest seafood markets in the Southern Hemisphere operates.
While the Sydney Fish Market is famous for its seafood, we were delighted to discover it offers so much more. It’s truly a destination for everyone—not just fish lovers—with a wonderful variety of bakeries, delicatessens, fresh fruit and vegetable stalls, coffee shops, juice bars, and even flower sellers adding to the vibrant atmosphere.
Of course, it wouldn’t be a Henley Brae outing if we didn’t take time to sample the delicious offerings. We enjoyed hot fish and chips for lunch, freshly prepared, while enjoying the lively ambiance of the market.
After lunch, residents had the opportunity to browse the many retailers, each offering an incredible variety of fresh produce and specialty items. Many took the chance to purchase some seafood treats and other goodies to take home, ensuring the day’s enjoyment continued well beyond our outing.
The trip was a great success, combining learning, social connection, and culinary delight.
